Why does the Williams scale skip 4 and 6?
The gaps are deliberate. Leaving out the 4 and 6mm marks makes the remaining bands easier to read quickly at the gingival margin, which is why the scale has stayed in use for so long.
Why choose a silicone handle?
A moulded silicone handle is wider and lighter than a solid steel one, so it takes less pinch force to control the instrument. Across a full day of appointments that means noticeably less hand fatigue, and the textured surface keeps its grip when wet or gloved.
What material is this instrument made from?
The working ends are AISI 304 stainless steel, set into a moulded silicone handle. Both are fully autoclavable.
