A set of seven periotomes, also known as luxating elevators, in a black finish, for loosening teeth before extraction. Each thin blade is worked down into the periodontal ligament space along the root to sever the ligament fibres, so the tooth can be eased from its socket before forceps are used. The blades are designed to cut within the ligament space rather than lever against the bone, the approach used in atraumatic extraction when the socket walls are to be kept, for example ahead of implant placement.
What is in the set

- Periotome, straight, 3mm
- Periotome, curved, 3mm
- Periotome, inverted, 3mm
- Periotome, contra-angle, 3mm
- Periotome, straight, 5mm

- The same seven blade shapes and widths as our standard periotome set
- Three blade widths (2, 3 and 5mm) to suit narrower and broader roots
- Straight, curved, inverted and contra-angle tips for reaching different root surfaces around the arch
- Black finish that makes the set easy to pick out from standard steel instruments on the tray
- Japanese-standard J2 stainless steel working tips, PPU handles
FAQs
What is a periotome used for?
It is worked around the tooth root before extraction to cut the periodontal ligament and loosen the tooth, so forceps are applied once the tooth is already mobile. It is often chosen when the aim is to keep the socket walls intact, such as before implant placement or socket preservation.
How is a periotome different from an elevator?
An elevator lifts and wedges the tooth free using leverage, while a periotome's thinner, sharper blade cuts the ligament attachment with gentle pressure along the root. The fine blades are not designed for prying or twisting. Many clinicians use both in sequence.
How does this differ from the standard set?
The seven blade shapes and widths are the same as our standard periotome set. The difference is the black finish, which makes these instruments easy to tell apart from standard steel instruments.
What are the instruments made from?
The working tips are Japanese-standard J2 stainless steel, set in PPU handles.
