For many clinicians, the curved 3.0mm periotome, or luxating elevator, is the shape they pick up first. The curve lets the blade follow the contour of the root as it is worked around the tooth, cutting the periodontal ligament fibres so the tooth can be loosened before forceps are used. Its medium width makes it a sound general-purpose choice for starting the luxation on a wide range of teeth, and cutting within the ligament space rather than against bone supports extractions where the socket walls are to be kept.

FAQs
If I only buy one periotome, is this a good choice?
The curved 3.0mm is widely used as a general starting instrument. You may then add a narrower 2.0mm for slim roots or a 5.0mm for broader ones.
Can I use it to elevate the tooth?
It is designed to cut the ligament, not to lever. Once the tooth is mobile, switch to a root elevator or forceps rather than prising with the periotome.
What is the working tip made from?
Japanese-standard J2 stainless steel, fitted to a PPU handle.
