A dual edge straight periotome, or luxating elevator, with a stepped 5/3mm working end. Rather than a single blade width, the tip combines two widths, 5mm and 3mm, in a stepped profile, so the narrower part leads into the ligament space and the wider part follows. Dual edge periotomes of this type are commonly chosen for deep fractured and decayed roots, where finding the root margin and starting the luxation can be difficult. The blade cuts the periodontal ligament fibres along the root to loosen it before forceps or an elevator take over.

FAQs
What does "dual edge" mean here?
It refers to the stepped working end with two widths, 5mm and 3mm. The narrower section enters the ligament space first and the wider section follows, giving a gradual insertion.
How does it differ from the 3/1.5mm dual edge?
Both share the stepped design. The 5/3mm is the larger of the two, for broader roots; the 3/1.5mm is finer and suits slimmer roots and tighter spaces.
Can it be used for elevating?
No. It is designed for cutting the ligament. Levering on the tip can damage it, so use a root elevator once the root is mobile.
