Can this replace a separate cutter?
For light wire within its stated capacity, yes. Heavier archwire and hardened NiTi should still go to a dedicated distal end or ligature cutter.
How should the plier be cared for?
Clean and dry it fully before autoclaving, and keep the joint free of debris. Wire-bending pliers last longest when they are not used as cutters, which rounds the beaks and shortens their working life.
