What is a Ward carver used for?
Shaping freshly placed amalgam before it sets: removing excess, defining the marginal ridge and carving cusps and fissures so the restoration meets the opposing tooth correctly.
When should carving be done?
While the amalgam is still carvable but firm enough to hold shape. Carving too early tears the surface; too late and the material resists the blade and the margins suffer.
